The last bad review is in captivity... the world is at peace.
Just a head up for you guys this is the first review I have ever written so sorry if it sucks... I just had to write a review for my all time favorite game! Super Metroid is where it all began for me. It is the game that put Metroid in the big leagues of video games. I would super Metroid a 10/10 overall.
Gameplay 10/10
The formula for this game is fairly simple. Explore, shoot, collect, and repeat. You enter a area of the game and you first must explore. The exploration of this game is probably one of the funnest things about it. It doesn't hold your hand like most games today. That's right there's no mystical fairy, no helpful towns person, no anything to give you clues whatsoever. You have to go through a area shooting any ememy that blocks your way and explore everywhere. Upgrades are hidden EVERYWHERE whether big or small and to progress to the next area to have to find some of these upgrades. some of the upgrades are obvious some are not. Did you think to lay a bomb in that corner then fall down that quicksand that usually drops you in that annoying sand pit? Probably not but if you did you would have found a power bomb expansion and a sub tank... Some of those items are downright impossible to find without a guide. Some of the paths to the next area you need to go to are hidden too even! I used to think this game was the hardest ever but one thing changed. This is the perfect game in this area. The bosses are down right hard but you can learn techniques and practice they become pansy bosses. Once you defeat a boss it leave you with a sense of acomplishment.
Controls 9/10
This is the only real area the game suffers in but it's not really bad once you get used to it. The only problem with the controls it that they are different. Usually in shooter games you'd shoot using the b or a button but not SM in this game you use the x button at the top of the controller. The only problem with this is that it takes a little time to get used to... OR you can just change the controls to what you want. So with that aside, the secret technique of wall jumping (which you don't HAVE to use to get through the game) is a bit hard to master and so is the space jump. But still after all these years the feel of the controls is still better than more recent games.
Grpahics 10/10
The graphics for this game are very well done especially for it's time. A lot of games these days try to make things look edgy and shiney. SM doesn't use any of these tricks it does what every game should do. Instead of making things look pretty they try to make things look realistic. That means cracks in the walls, ugly monsters, and dark caverns.
Sound/Music 10/10
The music on this game is phenominal!!!!!! The music is not only memorable but it also fits the environment perfectly. The music on this game sends chills up your spine. From the ominous music when you first land to the quick pased escape music at the end it is all awesome! This game is the master of setting the mood in it's environments. The sound effects on this game are also amazing. It's so good I can remember how it sounds when Samus jumps and shoots. When you might a boss they don't just stand there attacking you they actually scream when you shoot them.
story 10/10
You can summarize the story in one word: epic. You don't even have to play the previous metroid games to understand the story in this game! This game really has a awesome atmosphere to it. The game has no "movies" in it. Meaning that the cut scenes never really take control away from you yet it produces the same effect only better! The story of this game will leave you in awe.
replay value 10/10
This game never gets old at least for me. I think over the years I've beaten this game at least 30 times but probably more. It takes a lot amount of time to explore every place you can... I'd know I just did it a few years ago. It never loses it's fresh feel either. This game has so many reasons to come back to it. You could replay to find those major/minore upgrades you missed, shave off time on your score, or even try some hard techniques to sequence break. It'll take a good ammount of time to get 100% of the items (took me around 10 years) but it is really worth it. I've replayed this game more than any other game I've ever played.
In closing I'd like to say this game is well worth it's price and it is well worthy of being one of the best games in history. Even though at times you find yourself lost that is half the fun, using a guide seriously cheats you of a awesome experience in this game...
And because I love screenshots and making pages extra long... HERE ARE SOME SCREEN SHOTS!!!
